My father and I were on a rare visit to see his Aunt Jesse, who still lived in his childhood home on the eastern border of New York. It was 1944, and I was six years old. Just as we were about to leave, Aunt Jesse announced she was having the barn torn down the next day.
“Maybe you should see if there is anything you want in there,” she said.
